Email from Rev. Margo Whittaker (see email details here), Sept. 2005
... Happy September James,
Last April, ... I was invited to attend your workshops on liturgical presiding. I am finally writing to offer some feedback on those sessions. ...
The sessions were time well-spent, and frequently reflected upon in the following months. Your experimental theology was thoughtful and heartfelt. I appreciated your exploration of the processes of sound production and hearing. I hear myself speak differently now. Over the summer months, as I have heard various priests lead various congregations in celebration, I was drawn to the voices with a new awareness of the possibilities inherent in their breath.
In praying, saying and hearing myself say the words of the Eucharistic prayer during your workshop, I was brought to an old place in a new way, in knowledge and love. I was opened to the Spirit's working through me, and my heart responded to the words "His body... broken.." In all liturgy, James, I will myself to expect encounter with the Risen Lord. In workshopping the Eucharistic prayer, I did not have such an expection. The Breath of God, however, bloweth where it listeth... and he met me in that chapel and though I don't know what this means, as I prepare to preside full-time, Sunday by Sunday, I am terrified in my expectation: presiding is an awesome call, within the awesome call of ordained ministry.
Thank you for opening new possibilities in speaking, in listening, in hearing, for me, and, I hope, in the congregations I will serve. I will let you know when I am to be ordained (sometime this autumn, God- and the Bishop-willing), and where I am appointed. Thank you, James, and God's blessings on your work, your studies, and all your liturgical encounters,
Margo Whittaker
