Hi James,
Practising the delivery of the Eucharistic Prayer under your guidance was very helpful in some ways, and less helpful in others.
I have often been told that I speak too quickly - first by my parents when I was growing up, who told me I mumbled, and more recently, when preaching I have regularly been told that I speak just a touch too quickly. Being forced to speak unnaturally slowly helped me to be much more aware of the words I was reading, and your insights as to the benefits for the listeners in being allowed to digest the words as they were being spoken was new to me. I was not always clear as to what you were listening for which I found frustrating and disheartening at times. I like to know what I'm aiming for.
The reality is that in large churches today, I will be wearing a microphone and I will not be pausing 3 seconds between each word. It would have been instructive, therefore, to practise the Eucharistic Prayer with a microphone as well. Perhaps more time spent actually practising and less time listening to explanations, interesting as they were, might have been time better spent. The explanations could be written down, read and inwardly digested by us at our convenience. Next year there will be many more students so time will be of the essence.
Thank-you for your enthusiasm for your craft and for passing it along to Margo and me.
Karen
