Terrence crossed the Atlantic to Newfoundland in 1812 and engaged in business with his cousin Hon.Laurence O'Brian, a legislator with a fleet of sailing vessels. At age 31 he visited P.E.I. where he met and married Catherine O'Driscoll who not long before had accompanied her mother and father to the Island from County Cork. He was a shipwright on Lot 23, a 100 acre farm with a family of 10(1841 census). They lived there for 10 years.
